As I walked into Athens’ New to You Shoppe one particularly sweltering Saturday afternoon in July, the strong smell of lint and musk struck like a ton of bricks. This familiar scent brought a smile to my face; it is the smell of something so sweet – the scent of cheap deals on used goods.
While some folks shop thrift stores because they’re on the prowl for unique or vintage fashions, many people are just looking to save a buck, while others do so for environmental, political or social issues.
“I feel like there are so many clothes that have been produced already,” Athens resident Jordan Vincent explained. “Why produce any more if you don’t have to? Thrifting is good for the environment.”
