Community Yard Sale This Saturday

On Saturday, June 2nd ReUse Industries will be holding a Community Yard Sale at our Albany location from 10 am to 5 pm.

The event will allow area residents a high traffic location to sell their unwanted, used items. Everyone is invited to come out for great bargain hunting! There will be vendors selling food and refreshments. There will also be free canoe rides on the Raccoon Creek. ReUse's Community Yard Sale is part of the Vinton County Chamber of Commerce Countywide Yard Sale.

We'll see you Saturday!

OU Student Moveout Approaches!

It's that time of year again! Ohio University students around Athens will once again be packing up and going back home for the summer. Of course, this means that they're going to have lots of stuff to get rid of, and ReUse is here to pick it up!

From June 4 to June 13, ReUse will be collecting furniture, clothing,
non-perishable food items and much more from off-campus Ohio
University students who are moving out of town. During these days, students
can call a special Student Move-Out Hotline at (740) 591-3359 from 10 am to
6 pm for on-demand pickups.

Once a student calls the hotline to schedule a pickup, ReUse staff and
volunteers will pick up the student’s reusable items as soon as possible, even
helping to remove these items from the student’s home. On-demand pickups
have been a great success in the past, and during last years student move-out
proved instrumental in helping ReUse collect more over 50,000 pounds of
reusable materials from Ohio University students.

ReUse will be accepting nearly everything that can be found in a student’s
home, so long as the items are in reusable condition. Also, we will be partnering
with Good Works, a local non-profit that combats rural homelessness. As part
of this effort, ReUse will be collecting donations of non-perishable food items
that are boxed separately from other donated materials.

All community members, including students, are encouraged to drop off goods
in reusable condition at ReUse Industries’ thrift store at 100 Columbus Road
between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday through Saturday.

Thanks, Athens News!
Speaking of sustainable fashion..

That's precisely what week 4 of Slate's Green Challenge was focused on! If you haven't looked into the Green Challenge yet, you certainly should.
Project ReUse a shining success!

We would like to thank everyone who came out to Casa on Saturday to support ReUse Industries and take part in our first-ever DIY fashion show, Project ReUse. We ended up raising over $600 at the door, which is amazing!

Congratulations to Carly and Joan Ziemer, Daniel DiLoreto and their model, Jaime Nale on their winning design!

Also, congratulations to runner-up Allie Nordman and her model, Becky Kozar!

We'd like to thank all of the designers and models for doing such an amazing job. Everyone involved helped to prove the notion that sustainable fashion can be just as amazing as clothing bought new from a store.

Thanks to our winderful judges: Sonia Marcus, Ohio University's Resource Conversation Coordinator; Julia Pflaum, president of Ohio University's Fashion Associates; and Ryland Burhans, co-owner of Salaam.

Also, thank you to Paper Machetes, Men of Gentle Birth and Weedghost for making it a rocking evening.

We'd like to thank the local merchants who were so generous in venues and time:
  • Casa Nueva (thanks for the venue!)
  • The Standard Salon (thanks for doing all of the hair and makeup for the show!)
The following merchants were incredibly generous in donating gift certificates, merchandise, and free lessons which went into the prize baskets for our winning designers:Since this event went so well, we've decided it would only make sense to do it again! We're still deciding on a date, but expect Project ReUse II sometime in the next year. It's going to be even more amazing!

Also, we'll be posting pictures from the event in the next few days, so hang tight!

Businesses taking steps to reduce packaging

The New York Times has a great article today about the steps that businesses, large and small, are taking to make their product packaging more environmentally-friendly. Even Wal-Mart has pledged to become "packaging-neutral" by the year 2025. They hope to accomplish this through a series of initiatives involving recycling, reusing, and possibly composting. Check out more by reading the article at nytimes.com.

ReUse Weekend in Nelsonville

We want to thank the residents of Nelsonville for making yet another one of our community reuse events a wonderful success. We collected over 2000 pounds of reusable materials over the course of last weekend, and we couldn't be happier!

ReUse Around the Web

http://www.mtv.com/thinkmtv/environment/
Did You Know?

  • If every household reused a paper grocery bag for one shopping trip, about 60,000 trees would be saved.
  • Almost four million computer diskettes are thrown away every day, which equals over on and a half billion disks per year or a stack of disks as tall as the Sears Tower in Chicago every 21 seconds. It will take nearly 500 years for the disks to degrade.

(from the Oberlin College Recycling Program)

  • There are more than 6,000 reuse centers around the country, ranging from specialized programs for building materials or unneeded materials in schools to local programs such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, and ReUse Industries (ok, we added that one ourselves!) according to the Reuse Development Organization.
  • Between 2 and 5 percent of the waste stream is potentially reusable according to local studies in Berkeley, California, and Leverett, Massachusetts.
