‘Did You Know?’Facts of the month:

Everyday, Americans generate an average total of 200,000,000 pounds of waste. Only about a quarter of this waste is recycled, with the rest being incinerated or landfilled (go to this website for more information: http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/muncpl/facts.htm). To reduce waste, the Environmental Protection Agency urges Americans to use source reduction, which includes reusing. In poverty stricken areas, such as Southeast Ohio, reusing has increased social benefits. Donating materials to organizations such as ReUse Industries lowers the cost of living and creates local jobs.

Tax-Deductible Donations

ReUse Industries would like to remind you to get your tax-deductible donations in by the end of the year. ReUse Industries accepts materials of all types, including building supplies, Pentium III or higher computers, working and non-working appliances, and furniture. When you donate, you can be provided with a receipt to use for tax purposes.

If you live within in the city limits of Athens, Albany, Hamden, Jackson, McArthur, The Plains, or Wellston, ReUse Industries will pick up your materials for free (small fees apply in all other areas). To schedule a pickup, call ReUse-Industries’ main location—open 10 am-6 pm Tue-Sat—at (740) 698-8200 x 10.

In addition, building supplies, computers, and appliances can be dropped off at ReUse Industries’ main location in Albany, and all other materials can be dropped off at any of ReUse Industries’ three locations. Please drop materials off during regular business hours only.

Community ReUse Days

With the help of a grant provided by the Athens Foundation, ReUse has begun a yearlong project aimed at reaching out to rural areas in Athens County through a series of community reuse days. During these special collection days, community members or businesses can bring donations to a drop-off site or schedule free pickups.

ReUse held the first community reuse day in the village of Chauncey on September 20. The day was a success, with over 1000 pounds of reusable materials collected. On October 27, inside the villages of Jacksonville and Trimble, ReUse has scheduled another community reuse day. Stayed tuned for more ReUse days throughout Athens County.

Works for Wares

To better serve local low-income residents, ReUse Industries initiated the Works for Wares program at its main location in Albany. The new program, aimed to help makeup for cuts in social services, allows Athens County residents on public assistance to trade volunteer time for essential merchandise, such as appliances, building supplies, and computers. Two job-training clients have already utilized the program. For more information, see the new Works for Wares section on our webpage: http://reuseindustries.org/works.html.

ReUse Industries would like to thank the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio and Sisters of Saint Joseph Charitable Fund for making this project possible.
