Did You Know?’Facts of the month:

By reducing your personal consumption of electricity, you can save money and help the environment! Here are some simple energy saving tips:

Electronics that utilize remote controls consume 80% of the electricity they use when “turned off;” these electronics go to a standby position, so they can receive an on signal from the remote. To save energy, simply unplug these items or use a power strip you switch-off when the electronics are not in use.

Plugged in power ada
ptors are always consuming electricity, regardless if the product they run is turned on or off or even plugged into the adaptor. Unplugging these electronics, or utilizing a power strip, will save energy and prolong the life of the adaptor.

Switching to fluorescent lights will save you time and money. Although they initially cost more, fluorescent light bulbs, which produce the same amount of light, use 75% less energy than incandescent lights and have a lifespan that is an average of eight-times longer.

Bike Flowers

This past month, ReUse Industries increased its reuse art collection with “bike flowers:” artwork that resembles flowers created from old bicycles. Local artist Joey Boyle, who also made the bicycle flowers on East State Street in Athens, visited ReUse Industries’ Albany location and shared how to make bike flowers with AmeriCorps Volunteers. The bike flowers, now on display, compliment “Rusty Salvage,” a statue created by local artist Robin Kelly. ReUse Industries would like to thank the local businesses White’s Mill, Brenen’s Flowers, Sherwin Williams, and Athens Paint and Decorating for donating paint and flowers to the project.

Thanks to Former VISTAs

In July, two of ReUse Industries’ AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteers, Seth Fanin and Scott Britton, completed their terms of service. Britton, a published non- fiction writer and linguist, utilized his talents for ReUse Industries as a technical writer. Fanin also used his special talents for ReUse Industries, working exclusively on ReUse Industries’ computer reuse and refurbishment projects. Fanin’s computer expertise and local connections have greatly aided ReUse Industries, especially with ReUse’s PCs to the People program. Now a member of ReUse’s staff, Fanin will continue his service as ReUse Industries’ new computer technician.

Following moveout collections from Ohio University, all three of ReUse Industries’ locations are still fully stocked with materials. In August, ReUse Industries will be expanding our deals with 30% off all furniture at our Albany location and a $3 bag-sale on clothing at our Athens location, excluding blue jeans.
