‘Did You Know?’Facts of the month:
This time of year, with Ohio University’s Student Moveout quickly approaching, reusing is exceedingly important. Student Moveout generates more waste than any other time of year in Athens, forcing trash crews to work overtime – often collecting reusable items. Organizations like ReUse Industries insure that students and community members have an alternative to throwing away. When you donate to ReUse Industries you keep your local community clean, help provide low cost goods, and lower the amount of materials building up in landfills. During OU Student Moveout, ReUse Industries diverts more than 50,000 pounds of reusables from the landfill each year. The next time you move, remodel your home, or do spring cleaning, remember that you can donate the items you no longer need to ReUse Industries and receive a tax deduction.
Upcoming ReUse Events
Environmental Workday –Saturday, May 13th (10 am – 2 pm)
For May’s environmental workday, volunteers will be cleaning a scenic 2-mile stretch of highway 50 that is inside the Raccoon Creek watershed. Cleaning this stretch of highway, which passes ReUse Industries’ Albany location, is a great way to get outdoors, get exercise, and give back to the local community. ReUse Industries will serve refreshments to volunteers and transportation is available to those interested. ReUse Industries requests that all volunteers RSVP in advance. If you have any questions or would like to RSVP, please email VISTA@ReUseIndustries.Org or call (740) 698-8200 x 14.
Community Yard Sale – Saturday, May 27 (10 am – 5 pm)
After you do your spring cleaning, come sell the items you no longer need at ReUse Industries’ Albany ReUse center for free! The event, which will also feature free canoe rides on the Raccoon Creek, is free for all to attend. Chair and table rentals are available for sellers, and local organizations can set up informational booths for free. Call (740) 698-8200 x 10 today to schedule your free seller’s space.
Student Moveout Flyering – Friday, May 19th and Friday, June 2nd
Take an active role diverting reusable waste from the landfill. In the past, ReUse Industries has found flyering student neighborhoods to be an extremely effective way to get students to choose to reuse. ReUse Industries will be meeting volunteers in the Bunch of Grapes room in Baker Center, on the Ohio University campus, for two shifts; 10 am – 1 pm and 2 pm – 5 pm. To RSVP, email VISTA@ReUseIndustries.Org or call (740) 698-8200 extension 14.
Ohio University Student Moveout
From June 5th to June 14th, ReUse Industries will be collecting materials from Ohio University students moving out. From 9 am to 5 pm, students can drop off materials at ReUse Industries’ thrift store on Columbus Rd., or from 10 am to 6 pm, students can call a special student moveout hotline at (740) 591-3359 for special “on demand” pickups.
For on demand pickups, ReUse staff and volunteers will pick up materials as soon as students call. ReUse will even help remove these materials from the students’ homes. ReUse VISTA Volunteer Joe Cennamo, a veteran of student moveout, commented that “last year on demand pickups were a huge success. The students love it because we help them remove materials from their homes, and it’s a great way for us to collect items that might have otherwise been thrown away.”
Collaborating with Good Works, a local non-profit organization that combats homelessness, ReUse Industries will also be collecting donations of non-perishable foods that are boxed separately.
For more information on student moveout, call Jennifer Squires at (740) 698-8200 x 14 or email VISTA@ReUseIndustries.Org.
Earth Day
This year, ReUse Industries celebrated Earth Day with an electronics drive at the Galia, Jackson, Meigs, and Vinton County Solid Waste District, a display at the Earth Day Fair in Uptown Athens, and an on campus fundraiser at Tiffin and Gamertsfelder resident halls. The day was a great way to inform students and local residents about the benefits of reusing, collect discarded electronics that often contain heavy metals, and raise funds to purchase a new truck.
To purchase a new truck to haul reusables from campus recycling, ReUse held an on campus fundraiser outside of Tiffin and Gamertsfelder residence halls at Ohio University. The event featured a raffle, with items donated by local businesses, three local bands playing music, and a free barbecue dinner.
ReUse Industries would like to thank resident assistants again for their hard work. Collaborating with ReUse Industries’ VISTAs, residents from Tiffin and Gamertsfelder halls helped ReUse Industries secure donations, advertise, find local bands, and administrate the event. ReUse Industries would like to thank the local bands Davenporte, Victor Rasgaitis Brothers, Erica, and the Little Beans for their support.
