A Fundraising Thank you!

As ReUse Industries begins another year we are grateful for the response we have had to our fundraiser mailing. To date we have collected over 2,000 dollars from our most recent
campaign! That money has gone toward keeping our truck running, keeping our stores open and all the other expenses it takes to keep ReUse Industries open. Aside from monetary donations ReUse is also looking for volunteers to help in our stores or our office. As mentioned previously on this blog the VISTA program will be ending in July and having volunteers at this time would help to make that transition easier.

If you are interested in donating a day, a morning, or an afternoon to help ReUse we would love to have you! We have tasks to suit any interest...

Please contact our director, Cathy Wilson to sign-up and learn about our current volunteer needs:

Changes at ReUse Industries

Rusty welcomes you to our Albany farm location!!! Conveniently located on old Rt. 50, 3 miles from the OU airport.

As we head into winter, ReUse has made some changes at our Albany and Athens locations to stay competitive in this slowing economy.
Our Albany farm is currently open to the public one day a week: Saturdays from 10-6. Our Albany location is stocked with plenty of home, yard and construction items as well as a selection of large appliances. At this time, we can no longer accept non-working large appliances (although we will still take appliances in working order). Our PC's to the People program is accepting new models of reuseable computers, monitors, USB printers and scanners.

Our Athens store is open 6 days a week: Monday - Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm and has a huge selection of home items, furniture, books, toys and clothing. We have a large storage building out back stocked with large items easy to view and buy!!

The storage building at ARTS is full of great stuff!!!

If you have an item you would like to donate and would like to schedule a pick-up, please call the ReUse location closest to you for assistance:

saying goodbye!

Sherri Oliver and Ben Frese with Director Cathy Wilson on their last day

We are sad to announce that VISTA's Sherri Oliver and Ben Frese have completed their time at ReUse Industries with a combined 4 years of service!
While at ReUse, Sherri worked on fundraising , grant seeking and started Project Reuse. Sherri will be sticking around Athens and recently was hired at Athens County Children Services as a Public Information Officer. She hopes to someday go to grad school for non-profit management and own a dog named Meatball.
Ben Frese focused on creating contacts and relationships with businesses, schools, non-profits and individuals while at ReUse. He worked to increase quality donations and maintain ReUse Industries relationship's with the communities our stores serve. Ben will be returning home to Cambridge while he makes the transition to move out to California. He hopes to garden, surf, work and of course never stop reusing out west!

New hours at ReUse in Athens!

Due to a recent successful grant we will be lengthening the hours at our thrift store in Athens! The Athens ReUse Thrift Store will now be open 9 am-6 pm Monday through Saturday! We hope that people will take advantage of the longer hours (and longer days of summer!) to come in, shop and donate.

ReUse in the A-News!

There's a great article in today's edition of the Athens News about thrift shopping in Athens. Writer Jill Mapes has some great things to say about ReUse toward the end of the article.

As I walked into Athens’ New to You Shoppe one particularly sweltering Saturday afternoon in July, the strong smell of lint and musk struck like a ton of bricks. This familiar scent brought a smile to my face; it is the smell of something so sweet – the scent of cheap deals on used goods.

While some folks shop thrift stores because they’re on the prowl for unique or vintage fashions, many people are just looking to save a buck, while others do so for environmental, political or social issues.

“I feel like there are so many clothes that have been produced already,” Athens resident Jordan Vincent explained. “Why produce any more if you don’t have to? Thrifting is good for the environment.”

Welcome new VISTA Julia Flint!

Move-out was a big success! We worked for 12 days straight getting donations and have a great inventory of items. We had help from some of our board members and SEPTAS who helped make it all possible.

We are now back in the office and are welcoming our new VISTA Julia Flint. She just completed her junior year at OU and has decided to take a year off and join us here at ReUse. Julia is from Rayland, OH and was majoring in communications. She is potentially the last new VISTA we will get here at ReUse as we have been informed that there is the possibility of our VISTA program not being renewed.

Welcome to Julia and have a happy summer shopping at ReUse!

ReUse provides FREE pickups for Ohio University students!

Things have been quite hectic over here at ReUse. We are in the final stages of preparation for our annual Ohio University Student Move-Out Activities. Flyers have been distributed, letters have been sent and we're ready to tackle the huge mountain of reuseable items that will be left behind by Ohio University students.

If you are an OU student and would like to schedule a free pickup of your gently used items, you can give our Student Move-Out Hotline a call starting Monday June 9 at 10 am. The hotline number is 740-591-3359, and it will remain open from 10 am to 6 pm until June 18.

ReUse will pick up almost anything you can find in a student's home, from furniture to working electronics to clothing. We will even accept non-perishable food items that are packaged separately from other items, as we are collecting food donation for Good Works, a local organization dedicated to battling rural homelessness. Please remember to pack smaller items in bags or boxes. Also, keep in mind that due to the large volume of items that we receive during move-out, we reserve the right to refuse any item. To avoid this, please make sure that your donations are clean, dry and free of stains, tears or odors.

We hope to see you next week!
